My research is in the philosophy of cognitive science, with a focus on nonhuman minds, both biological and artificial. In my FLF project, I'm focussing on episodic memory - memory for personally experienced past events. I want to understand the roles episodic memory plays in human cognition and wellbeing, whether and to what extent it exists in animals and its roles in animal cognition and wellbeing, and the feasibility, opportunities and risks of building episodic memory into artificial intelligence. The starting point for my project is that these questions are interconnected and mutually informing, so there is real progress to be made by tackling them together.
