Project Title
Contaminants of emerging concern in agricultural systems: a risk to soil and plant health?Project Summary
My research group focuses on understanding the risks posed by emerging contaminants inadvertently introduced into the environment following the discharge of wastewater and the reuse of sanitation and animal wastes (e.g. manure). We have a particular interest in the fate of emerging contaminants in soil-plant systems considering processes such as sorption, degradation and plant uptake which aligns to complementary work investigating the sub-lethal effects of these contaminants on crop health. Work aligned to my UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship specifically investigates the risks of a subset of emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals, in agricultural systems, following land application of sludges and wastewater. Additional work is underway to understand the role of the environment in the development of clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance (AMR) linking expertise in environmental chemistry and environmental microbiology to better understand the fate of antimicrobials, resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistant genes in the environment.
